Your vote is your privilege – and your responsibility.

A little word from Ang & Hannah

to our Lizard Community:

The 2024 NSW Local Government elections are coming up on Saturday, 14 September 2024

Your vote is your privilege – and your responsibility.

Supporting Visual Arts and Culture is essential for our national identity and wellbeing.

We are asking you to USE your vote to support bold action for a thriving visual arts community in our local areas.

Read interviews and listen. Attend your local ‘Meet the Candidate’ Event. Ask Questions.

Talk to your friends, your family, your workmates. Be loud.

As a small but mighty team, Ang & Hannah are loudly calling on the local Council, any potential future Clarence Valley Council Councillors, federal representatives & candidates to support these key points at the upcoming elections:

  • Put First Nations Peoples and arts and culture first

  • Stimulate long-term economic sustainability

  • Local regional arts and cultural organisations, facilities and teams have representation and leadership that is reflective of contemporary Australia

  • Pay artists for their work correctly, transparently and ethically

  • Prioritise equity, cultural safety and accessibility

  • Local stories are seen and heard, regardless of the platform

  • Creative industries and practices are future focused, technology-enabled, networked and recognised at both Council and State level

  • Nourish arts education in our regional area

We would ask any exiting or departing 2024 Councillors to be loud and proud about any actions, wins, engagement or measures that show they committed to greater strategic oversight and engagement across the local arts and culture sectors.

Example Question for your local Candidates:

  • Should you become a Councillor for our local people, how do you see your role to support the Clarence Valley/Coffs Coasts local arts, entertainment and cultural sector?

  • How will you recognise and respect the crucial place of First Nations stories at the centre of our local arts and culture sector?

  • How do you see this Council and your fellow successful Councillors supporting our many local artists as valid, fairly paid workers and celebrating artists as creators?

  • Tell us about how you as a new Councillor, will advocate for local cultural infrastructure, including galleries, libraries, museums, archives and digital collections.

  • Share with me how you as a Councillor, will work to support local students to have the opportunity to receive a local education that includes culture, creativity, humanities and the arts.

Visual Arts and Culture are EVERYWHERE: in the cities,

in the regions, in remote communities, in every state and territory.

Visual Arts and Culture are Essential: for health, education, jobs, social cohesion, mental health, national identity, and a successful recovery. In times of need Australians turn to the arts.

During the pandemic, 73% of Australians sought out arts and culture to improve their mood and quality of life.

All Australians would benefit immensely from ambitious visual arts and culture experiences made possible through strategic policy and funding investment.
